Defending Civil Rights
in Education
The U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (“ED-OCR”) Alumni Collective is a group of former ED-OCR non-political career civil servants who served under both Democratic and Republican administrations. We share a common dedication to protecting and advancing the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States, particularly its students. Together, we have hundreds of years of Federal administrative experience, as well as expertise in legal and civil rights enforcement.
During these unprecedented times, we have come together to lift our voices and those of many of our former colleagues, continuing to call for and support equal educational opportunities for all students, particularly those who have been historically marginalized.
We do this by responding to the current Administration’s actions, which hinder or misrepresent the U.S. education civil rights laws. We work to promote and protect the civil rights laws that most of us dedicated our careers to enforcing, including:
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 – prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 – prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex and gender
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 -- prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability
The ED-OCR Alumni Initiative also offers support, training, and guidance for local governments, organizations, colleges and schools, and advocates seeking to ensure civil rights are guiding principles in our schools and colleges.
